The major seventeenth-century rationalists – Descartes, Malebranche, Spinoza, and Leibniz – are so named because they placed emphasis on reason or intellect, by contrast with the senses, for acquiring important truths. Indeed, they agreed that the basic truths of metaphysics are known by the intellect acting alone, independently of the senses. They thus held that the intellect can know the existence of God and the essential attributes of substance through purely intellectual perceptions. They cautioned that sense perception taken by itself presents a confused and misleading picture of the fundamental features of the material world.
In a letter to Oldenburg, Spinoza says he agreed to the publication of the work only on condition that a preface to it indicate that not all the views in it were his own, “since I had written many things in it which were the very opposite of what I held” (Spinoza 1985: 207).
